Bees

Helping Bees at school

Bees are one of the most delightful visitors you can have to your school. Their arrival is the sign that longer and sunnier days are on the way and a daily reminder of one of nature's most important processes: pollination.

Bees come in all shapes and sizes; in Ireland we have Honeybees (1 species), Bumblebees (21 species) and Solitary Bees (80 species). Honeybees don't need our help, bumblebees and solitary bees do. Each type have their own preferences particularly when it comes to choosing a home.

We have put together a selection of activities below that will provide your busy bees with food and shelter and make your school super bee-friendly! It's important to note that by helping bees you also help all their friends too: butterflies, moths and hoverflies. If you would like to know more about bees and receive free resources to help them at your school be sure to follow our annual Pollinator Project each spring.
