Bees

Build a Solitary Bee Home

In order to attract Solitary Bees you need to provide lots of little tunnels of all shapes and sizes for the bees to lay their eggs. These homes can be made in the classroom. As you will see below they can be wildly different so you can certainly get creative; there are just a few simple guidelines:

- Relatively water-tight structure (roof/plastic pipe section/ end of plastic bottle)
- Tunnels of various widths (hollow bamboo or smoothly drilled wood, 10cm deep)
- Tunnels are sealed at the end (only one opening)
- Homes placed 1.5 to 2m above ground in a sheltered, sunny spot

You will know when the bees move in as they will block up the openings with a door. Good luck! You can also purchase ready-made solitary bee homes from our partner Quickcrop here.
