Ponds

Create a Micro-Pond

This is so simple. All you need to do is sink a watertight container (eg: at the very least a dish, bowl, basin, bin lid or tray) into the soil in a sheltered and shady spot. Fill with rainwater to a depth of 3-4 inches. It will be no bigger than a puddle.

Add some sand and gravel as a bottom layer (for bugs to burrow). Ensure the edges are shallow (allowing frogs to walk in and out easily).

Finally, place a rock/ large stone or two in and around the pond for shelter. Simple! Standby for the wonderful arrival of dragonflies and frogs, bird and bugs!

Safety Note:
If you are still concerned about safety check out how other schools have added some extra protection to their larger ponds:
  • St. Brigid's NS, Stillorgan, Dublin
  • The Harold School, Glasthule, Dublin
  • Scoil Bhríde NS, Lisdowney, Co. Kilkenny
