The 'Big School Bird Count' is our annual campaign that both celebrates and helps our local, Irish birds.

Each winter our bespoke teaching kits are delivered to classrooms across the country. Classrooms receive everything they need to care for school garden birds and begin a bird survey, all backed by online resources and training from our team of teachers and scientists.

The aim of the project is to boost our local birds, train our young people in scientific identification skills, boost ecoliteracy, get them involved in a citizen science project and ultimately achieve our mission of connecting them to biodiversity through nature-positive experiences.

Our programme is fully booked for 2025 with over 3,000 young people taking part. Teaching kits will be delivered in December with the programme running through January and February.

The programme will return in December 2026. In the meantime, you can secure your place by purchasing your teaching kit here.
Why are we doing this

Birds are a wonderful topic to engage young people with nature. They are also a great topic for winter when most other nature seems to disappear and the weather can keep us indoors. Birds really need our help with food and water during this cold period.

In Ireland, our bird populations are in a lot of trouble with 63% of our most common 211 birds in a very bad situation - being Amber or Red Listed. Check out the brilliant BirdWatch Ireland for more info on Irish bird conservation.
