ST. PATRICK'S BOYS' NS, SKIBBEREEN, CO. CORK
|
The outdoor space created by Skibbereen BNS is truly outstanding and inspirational. Teachers, students, parents and the local community have come together to build this award-winning, organic garden. With only a third of an acre they have managed to fit in a huge array of features including: Willow Dome, Geodome, Herb Wheel, Zen Garden, Sensory Path, Bug Hotel, Raised Beds for each class, Amphitheatre, Orchard, Bird Houses, Woodland, Wormery, Mature Trees, Wildflower Area, Dead Hedge, Wild Trail and Hens! Phew!! The garden has become an integral part of school life. The boys harvest rainwater and manage composting. They can even join a school gardening club. They also sell some of their seeds to raise funds or donate them to the local Tidy Towns group. They grow all sorts of food from regular crops such as potatoes and onions all the way up to bananas, tea and avocados! They even have some exciting carnivorous plants such as the Venus Flytrap and Pitcher Plant!
